1. Where does the name come from?

Matthew Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard met in their early teens, on their arrival in Teignmouth, in South Devon. "All we used to do was hang around, smoke and listen to music. There wasn't anything else to do", said Matthew. He and Dominic formed their first group "Gothic Prague" in January 1994, before later changing the name of the band to "Fixed Penalty" when Christopher joined them, and then to "Rocket Baby Dolls" in January 1996. They appeared together for the time first during a contest organised in Devon. They won, and soon after changed their name for the final time: Muse.

Matt explains the origin of the name MUSE, although very briefly, in the acoustic session given to a Belgian TV channel. He says that they were looking for a stage name, and their teacher of art was at the time telling them about the 7 muses. They would have then looked into a dictionary, and chose this name ("it works well on a concert poster, it's easy to remember...").
